March Selfie // Double Exposure

April 02, 2014  •  Leave a Comment

It was a Friday night and my face was wet with tears. I just happened to be throwing myself a pity party. I had locked myself in my dorm room and was watching SOAP on repeat, intent on never coming out. You see, I had recently been broken up with and I thought the world was coming to an end. Wallowing in self pity, I couldn't find my way out of the darkness that I was in. It's a good thing I was in college, and I had friends good enough to barge in the room (Holler, Steph!), tell me to get dressed, and wisk me away to a party at Purdue! I was completely hesitant, but knew I needed to do something to get out of my funk, so even though it was almost 10 PM (WHAT?? I've always been an early in bed type of person!), I got dressed and decided to go.

This little 1 hour road trip away from Indy, was life changing to say the least (no really, to a 20 year old...it was!)! It was my first time merging onto a highway, my first time driving through a drive-thru window, and my first time going to a frat party! Whew...my world was a changing! Lol.  We had a blast that night talking to and meeting new people and even dancing some (No, I didn't get drunk, as I didn't drink at the time! - but who needed it! I was on an obvious high after merging onto I-65! haha) We drove home at about 2 AM, and as we pulled into the parking lot, Norah Jones "Don't know why" came on the radio and ended the perfect evening away from my wallowing!

I tell you this story because this month's selfie I did an in-camera Double Exposure. I've never done this before but have always been intrigued by it, soo I decided it was high time I learn it! It wasn't just me, but also my cat, Remmi who starred in the pictures...sometimes I think just me by myself is a tad boring, so why not spice it up with a cat, right?!?

Anywho, being a double exposure, it just made me think of how it's never too late to reinvent yourself. It's never to late to be more than one thing, and it's never to late to decide to change things if this life isn't going the way you wanted...You can't let one event in your life define you, you have to move on and remind yourself that you are the one who decides what your future will look like! And if you can't do that...go to a party with your friends - it works, trust me!  -Abby

It is such a joy to see Ms. Claire grow up! I swear every time I see her, she's approximately a million times bigger than the last time I saw her, and her face has changed so much! I love that about babies - they always surprise you!

This session is one of my faves, and she was such a doll to work with! Go on, take a look for yourself!

Little Sophia sure made me work for this session! She had SO MUCH ENERGY!!! It was good though, I needed the workout :)  I was so excited to be photographing this family, because I went to high school with Cynthia! I love seeing her in her role as a mom and think she's doing such a great job with that sweet daughter of hers! Enjoy these photos, and the love that shines through them!

A story in selfies // February

March 05, 2014  •  1 Comment

I know I am late, but I made a resolution at the beginning of the year to do at least 1 selfie a month. This may seem like an odd thing to do, but here are my reasons behind it:

1. Push myself creatively. Yes, this first month is pretty tame, but I plan on trying to think up new ideas and see what I can come up with each month!

2. Be more vulnerable with clients and anyone who reads my blogs. I want you all to know me and to really get a sense of who I am. I think it will be fun sharing parts of myself with you all each month! I will tell a story of some sort to go along with each selfie!

3. Having a goal and meeting it. I have tried to do the 365 day AND the 52 week photo challenges and never kept up with it - I figure I should be able to keep up with this one - YES, I am already behind, but I plan on catching up and accomplishing my 12 selflies before 2015!

Now, onto the selfies and my story of the month!

When I was little I remember my parents getting us dressed to go out in the snow and play. Often times I was the last to be ready since I was the youngest and probably also the slowest! Now, I don't know about you guys, but we had a nice little play set as children - one with a slide. That slide was the key ingredient of a snow day at home…if we were first to get ready and go out, we could be the first to clear the snow off the slide…with our butts…sliding down it! I don't know WHAT it was about being the first one to do that, but it used to drive me insane when my sisters would get to go out and clear the slide first. In my mind, it meant that they had more fun than me, and nobody wants to start off their snow day like that!

Consequently, I was often left with the next best thing…the swing, or even so, the next next best thing….just eating snow, hiding around a corner (I had to hide from my parents, who told me not to eat snow, but it was just so good!) And because of this, my poor mother was left with the task of rotating turns to make things fair, and listening to her 3 lovely children whine about who went first last time!

You may be asking yourself what in the heck does this have to do with anything?! I'm not 100% sure, but when I walked outside to do these pictures, I backed up close to this evergreen out in my yard, took off my coat, and a bird got spooked and flew away…and then another bird, and another. Yes, the snow from the branches absolutely fell off, right on my head and on my back! And while I couldn't believe that had just happened to me, it took me back to those moments when I was younger…I got the first snow this time, even if it was just off of an evergreen tree, from a bird…I had the most fun that day, and damn it, it was worth it!
